How can a person improve the life span of bamboo flooring? The answer is through the use of a bamboo flooring sealant, which is a chemical used to help seal any cracks or stains in the floor. Buying finished bamboo for the floor means that it has been coated with a sealant after being processed, which means that it only needs to be resealed as necessary. Unfinished, on the other hand, means that the bamboo has not been coated. The cost of these two types of bamboo vary, as does the process of applying the chemical to the floor.
By using a sealant to fix any cracks or stains in the floor, it helps increase the life expectancy of the bamboo. Normally, bamboo flooring sealant should be applied every six months or so, depending on the traffic of the room with the bamboo floor. Of course, areas that use a lot of cleaning chemicals would also benefit from the use of a sealant.
The reason why the sealer should be used in areas with lots of chemical for cleaning is because excessive cleaning can deteriorate the floor. Rooms such as the kitchen, bathrooms, or with a lot of traffic benefit much more from a sealer than those without much traffic or cleaning chemicals. The reason is because it is already coated after the processing, so it is better protected from the environment. Of course, after a few years of applying the sealant, a bamboo floor will need to be refinished. A finished bamboo floor, while more expensive to buy at first, will be cheaper in the long run because a person does not have to buy some finish and apply it to the floor right after buying it. Once a sealant has been used on the floor for several years, it will become necessary to refinish the floor as the old coat begins to come off. Applying a finish and sealant to a bamboo floor is part of keeping it beautiful for longer periods of time.
